Elementary School Counselor

Qualifications:  Master’s degree from an accredited college/university required.  Must possess at all times during employment a Nebraska Teaching Certificate.

Length of Contract and Hours: The Elementary School Counselor will follow the length of service as outlined in the Negotiated Agreement, with 10 additional contract days.

General Job Description:   In accordance with district policies and procedures, the Elementary Counselor is responsible for providing a comprehensive school counseling program that is preventative in design, developmental in implementation, and supports SPCS students in the areas of academic achievement, individual student planning, and personal and social development. The incumbent also serves as a consultant to educators, families, and community partners. Additionally, the Elementary Counselor works closely with faculty and staff of local schools, central administration, various social services agencies, personnel from other public school systems, and parents. 

Specific Job Functions:  The Elementary Counselor:

  1. Supports students in achieving optimal personal, social, emotional, and academic development.
  2. Collaborates with parents, teachers, administrators, the district social worker, and community agencies to support student needs and provide coordinated services.
  3. Designs, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive, data-informed school counseling program aligned with district priorities and instructional goals.
  4. Uses multiple data sources (academic performance, attendance, behavior, and social-emotional indicators) to identify student needs, monitor progress, and guide interventions.
  5. Provides individual, small-group, and classroom guidance instruction focused on social-emotional learning, student well-being, and skill development.
  6. Teaches and monitors students’ social-emotional needs, supporting Tier 1, Tier 1+, Tier 2, and Tier 3 interventions within the MTSS framework, including leading the problem-solving team.  (SAT process) 
  7. Assesses student needs and facilitates referrals to appropriate school-based supports, the district social worker, and community resources as needed.
  8. Supports staff by helping teachers understand student needs, interpret student data, and implement effective strategies for student support.
  9. Assists students with transitions, including preparation for middle school, activities, and future educational options.
  10. Communicates effectively with students, families, staff, and community partners while maintaining confidentiality in accordance with law and district policy.
  11. Adheres to all district policies, professional ethics, and NDE Rule 27, serving as a positive role model for students and staff.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Evaluation:  All teaching staff are evaluated annually according to the provisions of the “Appraisal of Teacher Service in the  Springfield Platteview Community Schools Handbook.  The building principal or designee performs this function, and the summative evaluation is completed at least twice annually for probationary staff and once annually for tenured staff. All due process prescribed in state statutes is afforded to teachers of Springfield Platteview Community Schools.
