Director, Security & Safety

Organization: The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Category: Operations / Facilities / Safety
Job Type: Full-Time, Exempt

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art seeks a seasoned, mission-driven Director of Security & Safety to lead the strategic direction of safety operations across our vibrant and historic museum campus. This key leadership role is responsible for emergency preparedness, physical security systems, regulatory compliance, and the daily operations of a high-functioning, guest-centered security team.

The ideal candidate brings not only strong risk management experience, but also a big-picture mindset—someone who can assess how procedures impact institutional goals, visitor experience, and cross-departmental collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic oversight of all safety and security operations, including emergency response, incident reporting, and compliance with ADA, OSHA, and life-safety codes.

  • Manage and mentor a team of supervisory staff and indirectly lead a large group of frontline safety and guest services personnel.

  • Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and performance protocols (SPIs) aligned with institutional priorities.

  • Partner with museum leadership to support safe and welcoming experiences for all guests, staff, and artists.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local law enforcement and emergency response agencies.

  • Lead risk assessments and present updates and recommendations to senior leadership on safety trends, staffing needs, and capital planning.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, emergency management, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).

  • 7–10 years of progressive leadership in security or safety operations, ideally within a museum, cultural institution, or large public venue.

  • Experience managing supervisors and large frontline teams, including hiring, coaching, and performance management.

  • Proven success in designing and implementing SOPs and institution-wide safety protocols.

  • Knowledge of access control, CCTV, and incident management systems.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to lead cross-functional initiatives.

  • CPP®, PSP®, or similar certifications preferred.

  • Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and special events as required.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $85,490 – $96,129 annually
The listed range reflects the starting annual salary for this full-time, exempt position. Final compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Nelson-Atkins offers a competitive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with 50% match, generous PTO, and professional development support.
