Job Description

To support the stewardship of a collection of over 90 thousand items across three physical sites, the Whitney Museum’s Frances Mulhall Achilles Library seeks a part-time Assistant Librarian. The Assistant Librarian will support the Head Librarian and other department staff in all aspects of Library and Library Special Collections development, cataloging, circulation, access, organization, and storage.    

Expected projects/work assignments: 

  • Assist staff with library collection development. 
  • Create original and copy cataloging in MARC for library materials, with particular attention to our ongoing work in reparative and equitable metadata. 
  • Assist with reference and circulation requests from staff and external researchers, including paging and shelving. 
  • Process library materials for secure storge, including items requiring custom preservation housings. 

Skills and qualifications required (including technology skills):  

  • MLIS or related degree, with experience in art sources and services. 
  • Experience with library cataloging (MARC, RDA, LCSH, LC classification). 
  • Ability to work independently with attention to detail.  
  • Experience with an ILS.  
  • Experience with spreadsheet software, including Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. 
  • Ability to lift cartons up to 30lbs is helpful.  

Compensation & Benefits: 

  • This is a part-time position (14 hours per week) with an hourly rate of $32.00.

  • This role will be covered under UAW Local 2110
